Individual Differences in Language Processing: An Embodied Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
The embodied approach to language processing proposes that sentence comprehension requires constructing simulations of the depicted objects or events. Two experiments explored individual differences in the processing of sentences with mental verbs. In Experiment 1, participants engaged in arm movements while reading sentences about mental events. In Experiment 2, participants read sentences about arm movements along with sentences about mental events. Both experiments manipulated the compatibility between depicted mental events and actual/depicted arm movements. Findings of both experiments showed that individuals who were different in terms of tendencies of self-reflection or levels of self-insight responded very differently to the compatibility manipulation. Some demonstrated the compatibility effect, while others showed a reversed pattern.

Online Processing of English Wh-Dependencies by Iranian EFL Learners
To be able to reach the level of ultimate attainment in the second language, learners need to acquire not only the grammar of the L2 but also the language processing mechanisms involved in the comprehension of sentences in real time. Contrary to its importance, very little is known yet about online L2 processing. This study examines whether advanced Iranian learners of English reactivate disloc...
متن کاملThe Upbeat of Language: Linguistic Context and Embodiment Predict Processing Valence Words
Previous studies have demonstrated that comprehension of conceptual metaphors elicits embodied representations. This finding is non-trivial, but begets the question whether alternative explanations are to be dismissed. The current paper shows how a statistical linguistic approach of word co-occurrences can also reliably predict metaphor comprehension. In two experiments participants saw word pa...
متن کاملAn Investigation into the Individual Differences Correlates of Iranian Undergraduate EFL Learners’ Writing Competence: A Mixed Methods Approach
The present study adopted a mixed-methods research design and explored the role of a set of cognitive (i.e., aptitude and working memory) and motivational (i.e., self-regulatory capacity and self-efficacy beliefs) individual difference variables in the writing quality and composing behavior of 78 Iranian undergraduate EFL learners. The necessary data were collected through a series of instrumen...
متن کاملAn Empirical Examination of the Association between Individual Differences Variables and Writing Performance of Iranian EFL Learners
The present study was designed to initially test a model of the role of a set of cognitive (namely, aptitude and working memory) and motivational (namely, language learning goals, self-efficacy beliefs and self-regulation strategy use) individual differences variables in writing performance of a group of Iranian undergraduate EFL learners and, subsequently, to identify the possible differences ...
متن کاملDo the Emotionally More Intelligent Gain More from Metacognitive Writing Strategy Training?
Though privileges ascribed to various facets of language learning strategy training have long been espoused with regard to varied language skills and components, the role some individual variables such as emotional intelligence might play in this respect seems to have received very scant attention. The researchers in the current study embarked on a probe into the impact of metacognitive strateg...
